Controlling them with light would provide an additional level of control. This work combines dithienylethene photochromic units, nitronyl-nitroxide radicals, and lanthanide(III) ions, with photoisomerization intended to modulate both magnetic exchange interactions and the ligand field around the metal.<\/p><p>Four dithienylethene\u2013nitronyl-nitroxide diradicals and three monoradical analogs were synthesized and characterized. The most compact diradical, previously unreported, exhibits an antiferromagnetic exchange interaction multiplied by a factor of 100 upon ring closure\u2014the strongest reported to date for this family\u2014as well as the first ON\/OFF photomodulation of the luminescence of a nitronyl-nitroxide radical.<\/p><p>The coordination of these ligands to lanthanide(III) ions led to the first complexes integrating dithienylethene\u2013nitronyl-nitroxide units, in both open and closed forms.
